September 6

I'm starting this again because school is back in and I am determined.

Drew this on the plane, an illustration of the gorgeous Long Winters song "Fire Island, AK" which I always imagined as a murder mystery a la Hitchcock, in the 50s with a kind of film noir feel.

Just need to put a picture here

August 19, 2010

My sketch for today! Inception, tada. It's Mal and Cobb, based on the song "Teaspoon" by the Long Winters. Hellza symbolism.

Back again

I need to start doing this again for many reasons! I'll be making one a day from now on, I promise!

So here are some pictures I've made in my LONG leave of absence:

Just need to post a pic

Sorry this is still the worst I've ever done with updating, but for right now I just need to upload a pic.

April 8

Ok I am way lame and haven't uploaded anything on here in a week :C But mostly because I haven't felt good with my tablet and been too lazy to hook up my scanner!

So here is a doodle of a UFO researcher!

Crap!

I forgot about this place!!

This I drew...on Thursday. So March 1. Doodled in class on notes about Arabic influences on the Renaissance C:

LOVE IS ALL I can't get over them

I had to really force this one out. I can't feel comfortable with my tablet anymore :C

March 30

I tried to do a better sketch today but this is all I have for you, world.

WOW And I'm Back

I took a very long hiatus, and I'm not going to lie, I did not draw very much at all during it.

I SUCK

But now I'm back, because that last couple weeks was justifiable kinda.

Here is the ADORABLE Swedish pop band Love is All. I LOVE THEM.

Doodled them during Media Criticism, and I guess they're sitting on the counter eating noodles.

March 22

Really quick, really crappy sketch today because I am TIRED and also suffering from art block.

Idk I was just drawing without thinking, I guess it's a sleeping dad and daughter on a boat? I guess immigrants haha. Maybe I'll clean it up someday.

March 18

Watched Master and Commander again tonight, and fell in love with the characters all over again!

Aubrey and Maturin, on a cliff with a crashing wave at dawn, facing some kind of confrontation. Aubrey faces it head on while Maturin seems morally conflicted by it. Oh how I love these two and their dynamic!

March 11

Still just working on commissions for the donation project!

I decided to photograph the finished piece since the scanner wasn't doing it for me.

It's still not great but oh well. That's why only Magi gets the real thing!

I'm a little sad it doesn't look more like Magi, but I think overall I'm very pleased with it c: I hope she likes it too!

Oh god I'm so tired

Ok all I am going to say about this is: ink, marker, bad scanner

Goodnight!

March 8

AH I forgot to upload this yesterday, but I did draw it yesterday, so here it is!

Character / misc designs for the animation I really want to make.

This guy is an Arabic astronomer circa Ottoman era, who meets an untimely end :c Based on a true and hilarious story!

Bye!

March 7

Just some random character sketches, based on nothing. I guess the far left guy is some kind of...ice fisherman? Then a little girl...then a fat kid with a soda and a dorky tween clutching his calculus book.

HA

Well anyway I just wanted to do some hatching.

And I used my shitty Easy Street Records ballpoint pen! Nice!

March 6

A prelim sketch of my Character Design challenge of this week, which I am really looking forward to!

The adjectives are:

Idiotic
Darling
Audible

I'm thinking a cute little boy with a huge mouth. He's supposed to be about to touch a bug zapper, but I have no idea what a bug zapper looks like.

This is kind of shitty cause I'm way tired! Great night!

NEW PROJECT

So once a week, I decided, I will design a character. I pull out three random adjectives from a random adjective generator, then pick a random style to draw it in and tada.

So this week the style was Disney, and the adjectives I got were "Pretty, Popular, Placid" Frankly they were a little too cohesive (not to mention alliterative) but it was just the first week.

Since it was only the first week, I decided to go a little easy on myself and didn't do any movement sketches.

Penelope Poplar, Disney princess lady...who is pretty and popular and placid.

A sloth! To practice kid's book style animal drawings.

The lines were with marker, the coloring is digital.

And also bad, the coloring is bad haha.

March 3

This one didn't turn out as well as I thought :C I doodled these babushka doll-people in lecture today using my FAB NEW PEN but somehow upon scanning they turned out super crappy. The color job was not super great either :/

OH WELL live and learn. They were fun to make.

March 2

Did I forget yesterday??

Anyway, I got these amazing new markers today, so the lines of this are done via marker, and I colored it in Photoshop. I think the combo looks really nice.

I AM IN LOVE WITH MARKERS

THE CRANE WIFE

Finally I got to do some watercolor, and it only whet my appetite.

For one thing I want to do a watercolor WITHOUT ink, which RUNS INSUFFERABLY with the watercolors. ARGH. I wanted the gown to be completely white. Annoying.

BUT art is learning to work with what happens. Roll with the punches so to speak.

Sometime in the last couple days...

I think this may have actually been my sketch for the 25th, but I don't remember exactly what day it was...

I really need to scan things as soon as they are drawn instead of leaving them to sit for days!

Anyway this one is called "Listen to Yer Elders, M'boy"

Feb 25-27

AH Jørgen Kieler, one of my historical heroes. Truly an inspirational figure, and a lovely Dane.

He actually looked like this: http://www.jfr.org/images/content/pagebuilder/10821.gif

I thought for a while I would do a comic about his life / the Danish resistance in general, I still might someday...

Been workin'

So I don't have something to post today, or yesterday, but it's cause I'm working on an "expressions chart," which has like...25 or something little drawings. I'm 16/25 done, so once I'm finished with it I'll post it!

Ok bye!

Feb 24

I LOVE HATCHING

seriously now that I know what it's called, I won't stop doing it ever.

A lil character sketch for a kid's book series I really want to make.

Supposed to be reminiscent of those old adventure comics, like TinTin and Little Nemo.

Feb 23

Silly little doodle of a buff bat.

:I

Feb 22

Whoa, a sketch of the day in true spirit of sketch of the day: CRAP

Just a really quick doodle, I'm exhausted.

A comrade is hurt, come and help us!

Distant shadow blobmen to the rescue.

Update of yesterday's sketch

Colored / designed better version of the sketch!

TIK TOK

Feb 20

For today I worked on a picture that as of yet has no color but will soon have lots of color.

It's...an obscure subject matter :I

It's basically a spoof based on the movie "Office Space" and the brilliant comic "Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name."

The design will be reworked so the type isn't just awkwardly thrown in there at the bottom left.

Bye!

Feb 19

So here is my sketch for Feb 12! Kind of a crappy attempt at painterly. A portrait of the two protagonists of the beautifully made Danish film "Flame and Citron"

The film is about the Danish Resistance, one of my favorite topics, so I was so surprised and delighted to find it on Netflix instant watch; I'd never heard of it.

It was really sad but very good, with a solid bromance and intriguing plot twists. Flame and Citron are the pseudonyms of these two guys, Bern and Jorgen (I'm too lazy to spell his name correctly). They go around shooting Danish Nazis. Then German Nazis. In the beginning Flame is the one who does all the shooting, Citron just drives. Then one day they are assigned to shoot a woman, Flame refuses, Citron says he'll do it, but can't. Citron was such a great character, I really felt for him the whole movie. He's just driven to do these horrible things that he feels awful about but at the same time he feels he must.

I rant way too much about the stories behind my doodles. Man I can't wait to do this for a living, haha!

But once again, backgrounds destroy me

More Catching Up

I am trying to catch up after a horrendous time of not posting (drawing but not posting)

So here are various doodlings that I have done over the past week. I really do want to be better about actually updating this thing.

Friday, February 12, 2010

Feb 12

So I started this yesterday technically, but finished it up today. It's a picture for someone on dA of characters she made up. The umbrella is really bad, and I think I would actually like to add some highlights later but for now I'm just kind of sick of working on it haha.

Yesterday's sketch needs to be scanned, so I'll do that tomorrow probably.

Been in a bit of a rut, just a tiny one that threatens to get larger if I don't get inspired soon.

Feb 9

Just a really crappy sketch of this priceless scene from the Odyssey:

Hephaestus, the god of metalwork. just caught his wife (Artemis) and Ares in his own bed together. He caught them in this fancy net made of chains. Then he invited the other Gods to come and shame them. But when Apollo and Hermes show up...

"Apollo, son of Zeus, then said to Hermes: 'Gift-giver, son of Zeus - you, messenger Hermes - would you, though crushed by chains, still be content to lie with golden Aphrodite?"

"To this, Hermes the messenger replied: 'Apollo, archer-lord who strikes afar, although I might be held by chains that are three times more numerous, more tight, than these, then - even if you gods should watch the sight, and all the goddesses - I'd find delight in lying with the golden Aphrodite.' At that the deathless gods laughed."

Ok so the comedic timing's not great but I just thought that was the funniest thing I could expect from an epic Greek poem. Poor Hephaestus is trying to shame his wife and his friends are just like, "Eh, I'd still do her,"

Please ignore how stupid their faces are and how weird their hands are :c

Feb 8

I'm getting back on track!

I sketched this out in pencil during my ConWest class, and then added the effects in Photoshop to make it look all old Greeky.

It's Athena and Odysseus! Athena loves Odysseus so much, I tried to convey a kind of protection over him, emboldening him and yet at the same time kind of nurturing.

What a complicated relationship the gods have with us haha.

Feb 4, retroactively

Self portrait for Intro to Drawing. Made a face which was kind of painful to maintain while looking in the mirror. The charcoal got all messed up and smudged and rubbed off, but I think it still looks pretty close to original. Just the hair is more messed up.

Catching up - All the Days I've Missed

So it's true there are a lot of blanks on this blog, but that's only because I have only just now hooked up my scanner at last. So I'm catching up, although most of these don't have dates, just think of them as the ones I missed.

The first sketch page is full of sketches I did while reading that lovely Chabon novel, "Gentlemen of the Road."

Zelikman on a horse...but I can't draw horses. Also I tend to draw people's forms first and then add clothing later but with this one I liked the form too much to cover it in clothing so I just outlined the clothing lightly in red.

Next we have Zelikman and Amaram, just cartoony.

At the bottom is my favorite scene from the book! Please ignore the weird looking hands (especially the far left's left hand, WTF is that?) In this scene, the two kids' (seen only in the last panel cause I'm lazy) dad is being smashed to death by an elephant. Zelikman slinks over to them (even though he doesn't really know them) and covers their eyes so they don't have to see their dad being killed by a raging pachyderm. I thought that was so adorable, I just couldn't resist drawing it. Plus I enjoyed drawing the expressions of revulsion while he watches the scene. Again, didn't feel like covering up the forms of the bodies, he wasn't naked in the book haha.

Sketch dump part two, just random doodles I did mostly during classes. We got a weird moonwalker cartoon. Some practice of hands, legs and an arm. Those legs are probably the best legs I've ever drawn, but still not great, and if I tried attaching them to a body or feet it would just be disaster. I enjoy drawing weird expressions, so the face is kind of a 'thinking about it really hard and not really pleased with the options' face. Actually when I draw faces I tend to associate them with sounds rather than real emotions. Like this face is a kind of sound you make when you take in breath through your teeth. The expressions Zelikman wore the bottom of the first page were associated with " ooooo" sounds. Finally there's the giraffe, all crosshatched and surreal.
My sketch today was actually an interactive flash thing. That is only two pages long. I'm trying to work it out!

Here!

The art isn't great, but it took forever :c

Feb 5

Ok once again, I HAVE been doing my sketch-a-day, but I have also been way too lazy to hook up my scanner. Sometime this weekend I will hook it up and then flood this with backdated sketch-a-days.

This is just a simulation of a pencil sketch in Photoshop.

On an unrelated note, I had an AMAZING meatball sub today.

All my doodle guys look the same, I need to do a many-faces sort of thing.

Jan 30

Another scene from "Gentlemen of the Road"! I love this book already. Chabon is such nostalgic gold!

As the character of Zelikman developed, I saw that he has a penchant for chloroforming people. That's his MO you might say. I love this about him.

In this scene, Zelikman's partner is trying to rally troops, and one naysayer is kind of bringing down the mood. A big problem, until Zelikman chloroforms the shit outta that guy. Then goes "See, God doesn't like him"
Hahaha classic.

In related news, my art block appears to be over! So for the love of God, the sketches I've been doing until now, just IGNORE them they are terrible.

Jan 29

I got a new book from the library today! It's another Chabon, a classic adventure tale, or so he claims. So far, first chapter, here are the characters.

I can't draw horses and I hate this coloring style. I need to work on colors so badly!

The story of this, the guy holding the horse threw a knife through the blonde guy's hat, and the blonde guy is less than happy about it.

I hope it's a good book!

Jan 28

Finally I've done a sketch again! I've been doodling in my notebook but nothing serious. This isn't great but oh well, it's a sketch-a-day!

These are two characters I made up. I kind of love them. There are like 4 other people but I was too tired to draw them all.

The story is of brave (Arctic?) explorers who set off for various reasons. On the right is the leader, a big, boisterous blow-hard who has way fewer credentials than he claims. He wants to discover new lands for the sake of fame and glory.

To the left is the doctor, who, when the airship crashed, was the only one seriously injured. Besides a broken arm, he hit his head pretty bad and now suffers from severe bouts of temporary amnesia. Basically he's no good as a doctor anymore because he keeps forgetting what to do. But he's a really nice guy who is kind of a motherly figure to the rest of the group.

Why? WHY?

Today, I finally emerged from my two week long art block. I stuck to a fairly complex doodle, nothing GREAT but also a new coloring style and some fun expressions. But I didn't save. And for SOME reason my computer WIGGED out and crashed. Which it NEVER does.

So.

I'm left without a Sketch of the Day, because of technical difficulties. Rest assured I did do one. I just...there was an accident.

Painful as it is, hopefully my art block will overcome this tragedy and emerge victorious over my brain and technology.

Jan 23

Wow all kinds of cop outs on this one.

Yes I'm really tired.

Yes this was the laziest coloring job

No I didn't draw the background.

No I didn't draw feet.

Boo Kiku you have to start taking this thing seriously.

CRAP sketch of the day but I'm exhausted.

And yet up til 4am.

Oh life.
