THE CRANE WIFE

Finally I got to do some watercolor, and it only whet my appetite.

For one thing I want to do a watercolor WITHOUT ink, which RUNS INSUFFERABLY with the watercolors. ARGH. I wanted the gown to be completely white. Annoying.

BUT art is learning to work with what happens. Roll with the punches so to speak.

Sometime in the last couple days...

I think this may have actually been my sketch for the 25th, but I don't remember exactly what day it was...

I really need to scan things as soon as they are drawn instead of leaving them to sit for days!

Anyway this one is called "Listen to Yer Elders, M'boy"

Feb 25-27

AH Jørgen Kieler, one of my historical heroes. Truly an inspirational figure, and a lovely Dane.

He actually looked like this: http://www.jfr.org/images/content/pagebuilder/10821.gif

I thought for a while I would do a comic about his life / the Danish resistance in general, I still might someday...

Been workin'

So I don't have something to post today, or yesterday, but it's cause I'm working on an "expressions chart," which has like...25 or something little drawings. I'm 16/25 done, so once I'm finished with it I'll post it!

Ok bye!

I LOVE HATCHING

seriously now that I know what it's called, I won't stop doing it ever.

A lil character sketch for a kid's book series I really want to make.

Supposed to be reminiscent of those old adventure comics, like TinTin and Little Nemo.

Whoa, a sketch of the day in true spirit of sketch of the day: CRAP

Just a really quick doodle, I'm exhausted.

A comrade is hurt, come and help us!

Distant shadow blobmen to the rescue.

Update of yesterday's sketch

Colored / designed better version of the sketch!

TIK TOK

Feb 20

For today I worked on a picture that as of yet has no color but will soon have lots of color.

It's...an obscure subject matter :I

It's basically a spoof based on the movie "Office Space" and the brilliant comic "Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name."

The design will be reworked so the type isn't just awkwardly thrown in there at the bottom left.

Bye!

Feb 19

So here is my sketch for Feb 12! Kind of a crappy attempt at painterly. A portrait of the two protagonists of the beautifully made Danish film "Flame and Citron"

The film is about the Danish Resistance, one of my favorite topics, so I was so surprised and delighted to find it on Netflix instant watch; I'd never heard of it.

It was really sad but very good, with a solid bromance and intriguing plot twists. Flame and Citron are the pseudonyms of these two guys, Bern and Jorgen (I'm too lazy to spell his name correctly). They go around shooting Danish Nazis. Then German Nazis. In the beginning Flame is the one who does all the shooting, Citron just drives. Then one day they are assigned to shoot a woman, Flame refuses, Citron says he'll do it, but can't. Citron was such a great character, I really felt for him the whole movie. He's just driven to do these horrible things that he feels awful about but at the same time he feels he must.

I rant way too much about the stories behind my doodles. Man I can't wait to do this for a living, haha!

But once again, backgrounds destroy me

More Catching Up

I am trying to catch up after a horrendous time of not posting (drawing but not posting)

So here are various doodlings that I have done over the past week. I really do want to be better about actually updating this thing.

Feb 12

So I started this yesterday technically, but finished it up today. It's a picture for someone on dA of characters she made up. The umbrella is really bad, and I think I would actually like to add some highlights later but for now I'm just kind of sick of working on it haha.

Yesterday's sketch needs to be scanned, so I'll do that tomorrow probably.

Been in a bit of a rut, just a tiny one that threatens to get larger if I don't get inspired soon.

Feb 9

Just a really crappy sketch of this priceless scene from the Odyssey:

Hephaestus, the god of metalwork. just caught his wife (Artemis) and Ares in his own bed together. He caught them in this fancy net made of chains. Then he invited the other Gods to come and shame them. But when Apollo and Hermes show up...

"Apollo, son of Zeus, then said to Hermes: 'Gift-giver, son of Zeus - you, messenger Hermes - would you, though crushed by chains, still be content to lie with golden Aphrodite?"

"To this, Hermes the messenger replied: 'Apollo, archer-lord who strikes afar, although I might be held by chains that are three times more numerous, more tight, than these, then - even if you gods should watch the sight, and all the goddesses - I'd find delight in lying with the golden Aphrodite.' At that the deathless gods laughed."

Ok so the comedic timing's not great but I just thought that was the funniest thing I could expect from an epic Greek poem. Poor Hephaestus is trying to shame his wife and his friends are just like, "Eh, I'd still do her,"

Please ignore how stupid their faces are and how weird their hands are :c

Feb 8

I'm getting back on track!

I sketched this out in pencil during my ConWest class, and then added the effects in Photoshop to make it look all old Greeky.

It's Athena and Odysseus! Athena loves Odysseus so much, I tried to convey a kind of protection over him, emboldening him and yet at the same time kind of nurturing.

What a complicated relationship the gods have with us haha.

Feb 4, retroactively

Self portrait for Intro to Drawing. Made a face which was kind of painful to maintain while looking in the mirror. The charcoal got all messed up and smudged and rubbed off, but I think it still looks pretty close to original. Just the hair is more messed up.

Catching up - All the Days I've Missed

So it's true there are a lot of blanks on this blog, but that's only because I have only just now hooked up my scanner at last. So I'm catching up, although most of these don't have dates, just think of them as the ones I missed.

The first sketch page is full of sketches I did while reading that lovely Chabon novel, "Gentlemen of the Road."

Zelikman on a horse...but I can't draw horses. Also I tend to draw people's forms first and then add clothing later but with this one I liked the form too much to cover it in clothing so I just outlined the clothing lightly in red.

Next we have Zelikman and Amaram, just cartoony.

At the bottom is my favorite scene from the book! Please ignore the weird looking hands (especially the far left's left hand, WTF is that?) In this scene, the two kids' (seen only in the last panel cause I'm lazy) dad is being smashed to death by an elephant. Zelikman slinks over to them (even though he doesn't really know them) and covers their eyes so they don't have to see their dad being killed by a raging pachyderm. I thought that was so adorable, I just couldn't resist drawing it. Plus I enjoyed drawing the expressions of revulsion while he watches the scene. Again, didn't feel like covering up the forms of the bodies, he wasn't naked in the book haha.

Sketch dump part two, just random doodles I did mostly during classes. We got a weird moonwalker cartoon. Some practice of hands, legs and an arm. Those legs are probably the best legs I've ever drawn, but still not great, and if I tried attaching them to a body or feet it would just be disaster. I enjoy drawing weird expressions, so the face is kind of a 'thinking about it really hard and not really pleased with the options' face. Actually when I draw faces I tend to associate them with sounds rather than real emotions. Like this face is a kind of sound you make when you take in breath through your teeth. The expressions Zelikman wore the bottom of the first page were associated with " ooooo" sounds. Finally there's the giraffe, all crosshatched and surreal.
My sketch today was actually an interactive flash thing. That is only two pages long. I'm trying to work it out!

Here!

The art isn't great, but it took forever :c

Feb 5

Ok once again, I HAVE been doing my sketch-a-day, but I have also been way too lazy to hook up my scanner. Sometime this weekend I will hook it up and then flood this with backdated sketch-a-days.

This is just a simulation of a pencil sketch in Photoshop.

On an unrelated note, I had an AMAZING meatball sub today.

All my doodle guys look the same, I need to do a many-faces sort of thing.
